Kindergartners project honored

A transition program for children entering kindergarten has received a national award from the Joint Council of Extension Professionals for Excellence in Teamwork.

The Kindergartners Are Most Precious program, or KAMP, was developed by the University of Hawai'i's Cooperative Extension Service 4-H Youth Development staff in cooperation with kindergarten teachers and schools.

The program was piloted in Kona in 1992 and is conducted in 30 schools statewide.



McGraw Prize entries welcome

Applications for the $25,000 2005 Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education are being accepted until March 11. The award honors individuals who have had an unusually positive impact in the field of education.

Teachers, administrators and individual policy planners in business and government are eligible for nomination. Nomination forms can be downloaded at www.mcgraw-hill.com/prize. Those without computer access can call (212) 512-6113.



Deadline today for imu benefit

Today is the deadline to reserve space in Kailua Elementary School's fund-raising imu on Feb. 18. The proceeds will help pay for the fourth-grade trip to the Big Island.

The public is invited to purchase space in the traditional underground oven to cook their food. The price is $10 per tray of food. Food has to be brought in on a large disposable aluminum baking tray, thawed, seasoned and well wrapped in foil.

Drop-off time is from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 18; pickup will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Feb. 19.

Wal-Mart seeks top teachers

Wal-Mart is calling for entries for its 10th annual Teacher Recognition Program through Feb. 27. The program recognizes outstanding local teachers with $1,000 educational grants for the school, a $50 shopping card to buy classroom supplies and an honorary Wal-Mart Greeter's vest.

Winning teachers can also apply for the state and national teacher-of-the-year competitions, for $10,000 and $25,000 prizes, respectively. Nomination forms are available at Wal-Mart stores and Sam's Club.



Drug-free teens plan march, film

EWAlution is hosting a Movie on the Wall on Feb. 25 to conclude Hawai'i's Drug Free Awareness Month.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. when 'Ewa teenagers and other youngsters will hold signs along Fort Weaver Road from Papipi Road to the Boys & Girls Club Hale Pono 'Ewa Beach Clubhouse.

At 6 p.m. adults will conduct a Drug Free march from the clubhouse to Hanakahi Street and back. Community policing groups and others are encouraged to participate.

The evening will conclude with a movie projected on the wall of the clubhouse.
