Correct club call pays off
DAVID WEST Nov. 11, 2004
Coral Creek
Hole No. 6, 176 yards, 5-iron
I was playing one of my favorite courses, Coral Creek, a beautiful layout with some spectacular holes.
I was playing well on the front nine with several pars. As I approached the sixth hole, I was thinking about what club I would use. This distance usually calls for a 5-iron, but I had not been hitting my long irons well recently.
I thought about dropping down to my 4 hybrid, but I was afraid that I would hit it sweet and juice it over the green.
So I pulled out my 5-iron, hoping I could connect and hit a good shot. I had played this hole many times, and I knew that if I wanted to get it close I had to drop it short and let the ball roll up to the pin which was positioned in the front of the green.
I hit the 5-iron with a sweet click that let me know that I had connected.
The ball bounced a couple of times and disappeared.
The group in front of us howled and I knew that I had made my first career hole-in-one.
