Police Beat: Methamphetamine investigation leads to Pearl City arrests

A man whose Pearl City home was damaged by a fire Feb. 4 was arrested yesterday for suspicion of trafficking in crystal methamphetamine while his mother was arrested for suspicion of hindering prosecution.

The mother and son were released without charges pending further investigation. After a fire gutted portions of the home at 1978 Ho'okumu Place in Pearl City, fire investigators reported finding chemicals that are commonly used to make methamphetamine, including acetone and denatured alcohol.

No one was home when the fire broke out at the three-story, single-family home. Damage to the home and its contents was estimated at $335,000.


Pedestrian struck crossing Dillingham Boulevard

An 82-year-old man was critically injured this morning after he was hit by the side mirror on a passing flat-bed truck while trying to cross Dillingham Boulevard by Kohou Street near Kapalama Stream.

Police investigators, who were called to the scene about 7 a.m., said the man stepped into the street from the mauka side and was not in a crosswalk when the mishap occurred.

He was in serious condition upon arrival at The Queen's Medical Center, but was later listed as critical after his condition worsened.


Fast-food armed robbers sought

Police are looking for two masked gunmen who robbed the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant at the corner of Kapiolani Boulevard and Ke'eaumoku Street early this morning.

The restaurant manager told police he noticed about 1:35 a.m. that the restaurant's front door had been damaged and was examining the door when two men appeared demanded money.

Both men were wearing black ski masks, and dark shirts and parts, according to the description provided to the police. One of the men was armed with a handgun while the other had a rifle, police said.

The men left the restaurant after they were given an undisclosed amount of money. There were no injuries during the incident.


Stalker arrested, police say

A 43-year-old Kamehameha Heights man was arrested yesterday after he allegedly kidnapped a 41-year-old woman from her workplace yesterday afternoon.

Police said the man, who has a history of stalking the woman, went to her workplace about 1:30 p.m., took out a knife and forced the woman to accompany him to his house.

Police said the suspect held the woman against her will until about 7:30 p.m. and then released her unharmed.

Police were called and went the man's home on Ihe Street, but he refused to come out of his room until 10:40 p.m., at which point he was arrested for suspicion of kidnapping.


Forgery suspect arrested

Police yesterday arrested a Honolulu man for suspicion of second-degree forgery after he allegedly tried to acquire additional cellular telephone service using another person's personal identification.

Police said the suspect, 37, obtained five cellar telephones last month by using the identity of a 43-year-old man. When the suspect returned to the store yesterday to try to open several new accounts, police were called and the man was arrested.


Toddler's injury leads to inquest

Police yesterday opened an assault investigation to try to determine how a 1-year-old girl's leg was broken.

The girl's foster parents brought her to the Saint Francis-West Medical Center emergency room at about 9 a.m. Thursday and told workers there that the child was in pain and was having trouble walking.

Police were called after hospital staff members determined that the girl's injuries were inconsistent with the foster parents' explanation.

The girl's foster father was listed as a suspect in the case although he was not arrested.


Sexual assault alleged in Kailua

A 41-year-old Kailua woman told police a stranger pulled her into his car and sexually assaulted hear early yesterday morning.

The woman said she was walking between 3 and 3:30 a.m. when the man, who appeared to be in his 20s, approached her and forced her into his car. The woman said that after she was assaulted, the assailant pushed her out of the car and drove off.

The woman was taken to the Sex Abused Treatment Center and examined, and later reported the attack to police.


Woman robbed after accepting ride

Police are checking on a report by a 30-year-old woman who said she was robbed yesterday morning by a man she met at a Waikiki convenience store.

The woman told police the man offered her a ride home, and then demanded money as he was driving toward her Waikiki apartment.

When the pair arrived in front of her apartment, the man took out a black handgun, pointed it at her and used physical force to take away her property, the woman said.

Police classified the case as a first-degree robbery.


Teacher threatened; youth arrested

A 16-year-old student was arrested at Wai'anae High School yesterday morning after he allegedly threaten to harm a 34-year-old teacher at the school.

The teacher told police the boy began to argue with her and that she felt threatened.

Police initially classified the incident as terroristic threatening and arrested the boy, but charged him later with the lesser offense of harassment.


Alert officer nabs alleged car thief

A 24-year-old woman who was stopped on the H-1 Freeway late Wednesday night for a traffic violation was arrested yesterday for suspicion of driving a stolen car.

Police said a patrol officer pulled the woman over about 11:55 p.m. while she was traveling eastbound on the freeway near the Palehua underpass by Waipahu.

As he was preparing to write a traffic ticket, the police officer noticed the car's entire ignition system had been "punched out."

The driver had no identification and could not produce any documentation for the car. The car's registered owner was contacted and told police the car had been stolen but not yet reported to police.

The driver was then arrested for suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle.


Car break-in leads ends in arrest

Police arrested a 23-year-old man early yesterday morning after a 29-year-old woman called police to say the man had broken into her car.

Police said the woman was returning to a parking lot fronting Saratoga Road at about 1 a.m. when she saw a man inside the car searching through it.

Police said the woman kept her eye on the man while she used her cellular telephone to call 911. Police arrived in time to catch the suspect as he tried to run from the parking lot. They reported finding items taken from the car in the man's pants pockets.

Felony charges of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle were pending against the man this morning.
