Jay Deputy grew up in Indiana, cutting lawns for extra cash just as many kids do today.

But instead of growing out of the turf work when he got older, he grew with it.

Today, the Kailua resident, 61, joins the Advertiser's gardening column rotation as a turf and general landscaping specialist.

His columns will cover various turf grasses, turf problems and solutions, and how-to on lawn renovations, among other topics.

"It will be good, useful stuff," said Deputy, an education specialist in landscape horticulture with the University of Hawaii-Manoa Department of Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences.

Deputy has worked in the areas of plant physiology and horticulture at UH for more than 30 years. He earned a bachelor's in education from Ball State University and a master's in plant physiology from UH.

As an administrator with the Landscape Industry Council of Hawai'i, Deputy also oversees local certification exams for the Associated Landscape Contractors of America's certified landscape technician program.

In his free time, Deputy enjoys "gardening and (doing) lawn work," he said, laughing. "I'm a yard guy."
