Iolani rallies past Punahou

By Kyle Sakamoto

Pape scored 10 of his 12 points in the final five minutes, including the go-ahead basket with seven seconds remaining, as host Iolani (14-0) rallied past Punahou, 44-43, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu game.

The win was Iolani's 56th in a row against ILH teams and 97th straight against O'ahu opponents.

It was the regular-season finale for both teams.

On the game-winning shot, Pape had the ball on the right wing, drove into the paint and got a bank shot to fall with 6-foot-6 Buffanblu center Spencer McLachlin bearing down on him.

"I was struggling the whole game," said Pape, a 6-1 senior. "In the timeout before, Doc (coach Mark Mugiishi) and all my teammates told me it was my turn. My teammates were behind me 100 percent."

Punahou sophomore guard Miah Ostrowski, who scored 11 points, missed a running 28-footer as time expired.

Punahou (11-3) seemed to gain control after a lay-in by McLachlin and free throw by Kasey Ko for a 43-38 lead with 54 seconds remaining.

Pape scored on a layup and junior teammate Kawika Shoji stole the ball in the backcourt and hit a layup with 30 seconds left to cut the deficit to 43-42.

The Raiders stole the ball under Punahou's basket with 15 seconds remaining, which set up Pape's game-winner.

"It was a fantastic ending," Mugiishi said. "Kyle Pape struggled all game with his offense, he couldn't hit anything. But in the big moments, he came through with the big buckets."

Iolani junior guard Vinny Nip scored 12 points, including two 3-pointers in the third period and the first four points of the fourth. He also did a good job defensively on Ostrowski, according to Mugiishi.

The game had no impact on the standings as Iolani had already wrapped up the league title and Punahou clinched second earlier this week. A third ILH team will join them in the state tournament, which starts Feb. 23.
