Self-defense classes for women offered; offensive linemen clinics available

Relson Gracie, a member of the famed Brazilian jiujitsu family, will begin teaching women's self-defense classes in Honolulu.

The classes will be held Mondays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Relson Gracie's Academy located on 844 Queen St., second floor. Cost is $70 a month.

Gracie was a Brazilian national jiujitsu champion for 22 consecutive years.

Linemen clinics offered

Former University of Hawai'i offensive lineman Brian Derby will be holding his annual clinics for offensive linemen starting Feb. 19.

The clinics are free, but space is limited. For information on times and places, call 386-1981.



CHEERLEADING

Cheering contest set

The third annual Aloha International Spirit Cheerleading Championships will be Feb. 19 at the Waikiki Shell.

Six teams from Hawai'i — No Ka 'Oi All Stars, Drill Team Hawai'i, Kamehameha Intermediate, Radford High, Waipahu High and Pacific Cheer Academy — will be competing against teams from the Mainland.

Pace All-Stars, a club from Los Angeles that won last year's competition, is in this year's field.

The competition begins at 9 a.m. Tickets are $10.



TENNIS

Volunteers honored

Veteran tennis volunteers Red Tavares, Shirly Sypert and Bob Keanui were honored by the City and County Tennis Advisory Committee for their roles in the Hawai'i tennis community.

Tavares is a youth tennis coach at Ke'ehi Lagoon, Sypert is a tennis advisory secretary with more than 10 years of service and Keanui is a support/coach and mentor for tennis in Hawai'i.

All three received plaques and a letter of recognition.
