'Bows, Alabama postponed by rain

Advertiser Staff

Last night's Hawai'i-Alabama collegiate baseball game at Les Murakami Stadium was postponed because of rain.

Kimo White of Kailua looks on as 4-year-old son Reynton snacks on french fries at Les Murakami Stadium last night. The game was postponed and a doubleheader will be played today.

A doubleheader will start at 2 p.m. today with the second game starting no earlier than 6:35 p.m.

Ticket stubs from last night's postponent will be honored for the doubleheader. The ticket stub for last night's seat is good for the 2 p.m. game, but will be for standing-room only for the 6:35 p.m. game. Those with tickets for the 6:35 p.m. game may use it for the 2 p.m. game on a standing-room only basis, but will get the reserved seat for the nightcap.

Both games are scheduled for nine innings.

Right-hander Stephen Bryant is scheduled to start the first game for UH against Alabama left-hander Brandon Belcher. Right-hander Colby Summer will make his UH debut in the nightcap against left-hander Brent Carter for the Crimson Tide. Summer had been out the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2003.

Esteban Lopez will catch one of the games for UH with freshman Erik Ammon or centerfielder Matt Inouye catching the other game. Hawai'i coach Mike Trapasso said Ammon hurt his right throwing shoulder when he tumbled while jogging Thursday.

Both games will be televised by KFVE channel 5. KKEA (1420 AM) will broadcast part of the first game but break away for the UH men's basketball game, which starts at 3 p.m. (HST).

The last time rain affected a UH baseball game was last year's home finale against Fresno State. The game was canceled when it was determined it could not be made up during UH's final road trip at Nevada and San Jose State.

The Rainbows (1-0) won Thursday's season opener, 4-1. Alabama had won 11 consecutive season openers before Thursday's loss to UH. It was the first time both programs played each other.

The four-game series concludes at 1:05 p.m. tomorrow. Junior college transfer Justin Costi is slated to pitch for UH against Alabama's T.J. Large in a battle of right-handers.
