University of Hawai'i men's coach Mike Wilton is a candidate to be the next head coach of the Brigham Young University women's volleyball team.
"I have no idea what's going to happen," Wilton said. No offer was extended during the two-day visit.
He declined to say which side initiated the contact. But he said he agreed to the meeting "because (BYU officials) wanted to see me."
UH athletic director Herman Frazier and associate athletic director Tom Sadler gave BYU permission to meet with Wilton. BYU paid for the trip.
Wilton also met with several members of the women's team yesterday.
"It's been pretty recent," Wilton said of the discussions that led to the two-day trip. "I talked to various people. It was a conversation I needed to have. It was something I did with my family in mind."
Shortly after the Warriors defeated Pepperdine in the final match of the 2002 NCAA Championships, Wilton interviewed for the vacant head coaching job of the BYU men's volleyball team. He withdrew his candidacy, saying he felt UH was a better situation for his family.
Of this interview, Wilton said, "I came here for a family purpose."
Wilton and his family have strong ties to the Mormon church, which administers BYU. Wilton is a Mormon high priest, and his wife, Ku'ulei, is a researcher for the church. The couple's youngest son, Mike Jr., played for the Cougars, and a daughter, Melissa, lettered at Utah State.
Wilton is a graduate of Church College of Hawai'i, now known as BYU-Hawai'i.
In 13 seasons at UH, Wilton is 249-106. The Warriors, who are 8-1 this season and ranked third nationally, were stripped of the 2002 national title because their top player, Costas Theocharidis, had professional experience before enrolling at UH in August in 1999.
Wilton is in the final year of a three-year contract.
He returns to Honolulu today.
"At this time," he said, "my mind is on my family and (upcoming opponent) USC."
