Secret to inner peace hidden in water

"THE HIDDEN MESSAGES IN WATER" By Masaru Emoto; Beyond Words Publishing, paper, $16.95

By Wanda Adams
Advertiser Staff Writer

OK, suspend your disbelief here for a minute or, if anything verging on the New Age causes you an allergic reaction, quit reading altogether. This book purports to show, through research centered around photographs of ice crystals, that the secret to inner peace is water. The author is a Japanese man, certified by the Open International University as a doctor of alternative medicine, whose work was featured in the cult indie film "What The #$*! (Bleep) Do We Know?"

Emoto's argument goes like this: Human beings are 70 percent water. If you give positive messages to water, then freeze it, it makes beautiful crystals. If you talk nasty to it, microwave it or pollute it, the water won't crystallize, or will make ugly or broken crystals. This has something to do with vibrations through which everything in the world is linked, but I had trouble wrapping my poor left-dominated brain around that part.

He says the crystal experiments prove we all need to be nicer to each other, to the Earth, and to ourselves, to keep from physical and spiritual havoc. The message of water, he says, is a message of intentional living.

Emoto will discuss his theories at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the door. Other appearances are Feb. 17 on Maui, Feb. 23 in Kona, Feb. 24 in Hilo. Call (808) 875-8820 or go to www.Emototickets.com.
