Sewer break snarls East Honolulu traffic

By Suzanne Roig
Advertiser Staff Writer

A sewer main break on Kalaniana'ole Highway in Niu Valley today caused traffic to back up for miles during the peak evening commute and into the night.

The break was reported at 3:10 p.m. near the Niu Valley Wastewater Pumping Station at 5712 Kalaniana'ole Highway, near Niu Valley Shopping Center.

Police diverted traffic on all three eastbound lanes onto two westbound lanes. Townbound traffic took a detour through Niu Valley along Halema'uma'u Street. As of 9:30 p.m. a third eastbound lane was opened, the passing lane on the eastbound side.

This morning, one townbound lane and two eastbound lanes will closed for repairs, city spokesman Mark Matsunaga said. Repairs are expected to be completed by mid-morning, he said.

The pipes in the area are about 40 years old and have experienced problems with seawater infiltration, Matsunaga said.
