Advertiser Staff

Hawai'i's Amy Sanders been named the Western Athletic Conference women's basketball Player of the Week for her performance against conference-leader Louisiana Tech and Southern Methodist.

This is the first WAC Player of the Week honor for Sanders and the first honor for the Rainbow Wahine this season.

Sanders, a junior from Huntington, Calif., averaged 18.5 points and 10.5 rebounds in two games last week. Sanders, a 5-foot-11 swing player, scored 27 points, including the game-winning basket, and had 10 rebounds in a 79-78 overtime victory against visiting Louisiana Tech on Thursday. Sanders had 10 points and 11 rebounds in a 52-50 loss to visiting SMU on Saturday.

Hawai'i's victory over Louisiana Tech was the first in 15 all-time meetings dating back to 1980. Hawai'i, Rice and Boise State are the only teams to have defeated the three-time defending WAC champion Louisiana Tech since they joined the WAC in 2001.
