A national tour, now under way, will hit the Islands for the first time in seven years, and is being presented by Broadway in Honolulu, a division of Clear Channel Theatrical, which hopes to stage more musicals in the Islands.

"It is time to introduce 'CATS' to a new generation," said Bruce Granath of the presenting organization.

The feline musical, based on "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats" by T.S. Eliot. has had previous sold-out engagements in Honolulu.

The show, which ran for 18 years on Broadway and thus living up to its motto, "Now and Forever," is the longest-running musical ever on the Great White Way. It won seven Tony Awards in 1983, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Lighting and Best Costumes.

The production, set in a junkyard, boasts cats with different personalities and agendas, including Grizzabella, the glamour cat; Old Deuteronomy, the sage one; Gus, the theater soul; Rum Tum Tugger, the rock 'n' roll cat; Mr. Mistoffolees, the magical cat; and more. They are all contemplating the journey to the "heavyside layer," a special place.

Tickets go on sale Friday at the Blaisdell box office and TicketMaster locations, including Times Super Market outlets.
