ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Choc it up to experience

Advertiser Staff

On this day of love and sweets, chocolate treats will no doubt be in abundance. But what to do if the stuff gets on your clothes (say, on your collar)?

Graham and Rosemary Haley, authors of "Haley's Hints," offer this stain-removal tip for washable fabrics:

Remove any excess chocolate and immediately run club soda through the fabric. Rinse with a mild detergent and cold water. If the stain persists, follow up with a mixture of one tablespoon ammonia and two cups cold water. Dab the solution on the fabric, working from the outside in. Rinse well and wash as usual.

Edibles and the Earth

Learn how our eating habits affect both our health and the planet at a workshop presented by the Sierra Club's Hawai'i chapter. The free session, part of the organization's monthly sustainable-living series, will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the YWCA on Richards Street.

William Harris, author of "The Scientific Basis of Vegetarianism," will discuss how we can lessen our impact on the Earth by eating consciously. Healthful snacks will be served, and vegetarian recipes will be available. For details: bettygearen@verizon.net or 524-8427.
