Take a virtual field trip into Hawai'i's volcanoes

Advertiser Staff

Teachers and students around the world can visit Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park on an "electronic field trip" made available for the first time this week.

On the Web

Participants can log on to the virtual visit and field-trip journal portions of the electronic field trip at www.efieldtrips.org/volcanoes until July 31.

"Volcanoes: The Earth at Work!" is one of 16 free "eFieldTrips" offered online by Distance Learning Integrators Inc. Others focus on national parks such as Death Valley in California and Denali in Alaska; historic events such as the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education; and environmental topics such as manatees, sea turtles and invasive species.

Participants in the volcanoes program are treated to a virtual visit to explore Hawaiian volcanoes and the landscapes they create. Students can complete worksheets as they navigate through the virtual visit to reinforce their learning about volcanoes.

Then, on March 7 and 8, students can "ask the experts" by e-mailing questions to park rangers. On March 10, park ranger Joni Mae Makuakane-Jarrell will be available for a live Web chat from 1 to 2 p.m. EST. She'll also be available from 11 a.m. to noon Hawai'i time.

Distance Learning Integrators was founded in 1996 to help implement distance-learning programs. It started www.efield trips.org to provide services to education specialists at national parks and other points of interest to enable them to provide an interactive virtual field trip to students everywhere. A company Web site said the field trips also provide students with the opportunity to interact with experts in the fields of natural resource conservation, history, science, technology and the arts.
