HALEAKALA WORK DAY The Friends of Haleakala need volunteers to assist with removal of pine seedlings in the Hosmer's Grove and Pu'unianiau areas from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Limited to 20 people; long pants and closed-toed shoes are required. Call Farley Jacob at (808) 248-7660.

THE GREAT WHALE COUNT Count the whales from Maui's shorelines and lookout points with whale researchers and other volunteers from across the country from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. Feb. 26 during the Pacific Whale Foundation's Great Whale Count. Training and tools provided. Call (808) 249-8811.

WHALE COUNT 2005 Volunteers are needed on O'ahu, Kaua'i and the Big Island for the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary's ocean count from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Feb. 26 and March 26. To register, call (888) 559-4253, Ext. 253 on the Big Island; 397-2651, Ext. 253 on O'ahu; and (808) 246-2860 on Kaua'i.

FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT Volunteers are needed from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 26 to help the Department of Land and Natural Resources' Na Ala Hele Trails and Access O'ahu program maintain a two-acre forest area in Makiki Valley. Water, gloves and tools provided; bring long pants, long-sleeved shirt, shoes or boots, insect repellent and lunch. Meet at Makiki Forestry Baseyard. Call 973-9782.

WINDWARD CLEANUP The Great Kapa'a Valley & Kawai Nui Marsh Community Stewardship Workday will be from 7 a.m. to noon Feb. 26. Volunteers ages 11 and up are needed to pick up litter on the quarry road, clear the marsh viewplane, plant native plants, and drive trucks to pick up bagged trash. Wear close-toed shoes with gripping soles, long-sleeved shirts, insect repellant, sunscreen, and a hat; breakfast, lunch, water and snacks provided, along with gloves and trash bags. FREE MULCH ON BIG ISLAND Help yourself to free mulch from 6:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. daily at a new public pickup area near the Kealakehe Transfer Station, or from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Hilo Transfer Station. Loading assistance is available only at the Hilo location for $10 to $40 depending on vehicle size. Deliveries of large truckloads of mulch can be arranged by calling the Big Island Recycling representative at (808) 306-1876.

TOUR DE TRASH A free "Construction & Demolition" bus tour, part of the City and County of Honolulu Refuse Division's "Tour de Trash" program, will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. HAZARDOUS WASTE DROP-OFF March 11 is the deadline to make appointments for the next household hazardous waste drop-off March 19. Call 692-5411 or e-mail info@opala.org to schedule an appointment. Before calling, take an inventory of the type and quantity of materials. The following materials are among a long list that will be accepted: acetone, arsenic, herbicides, kerosene, lighter fluid, mercury, paint stripper and thinner, rust remover, swimming pool chemicals and wood preservatives.
