Punahou girls get No. 1 seed in soccer

Two-time defending champion Punahou was awarded the top seed in the state high school girls soccer championships that start Wednesday at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park.

The Buffanblu (8-2-2) are the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champions. Also seeded are No. 2 'Aiea (12-1-1), the O'ahu Interscholastic Association champion; No. 3 Baldwin (9-1-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champ and No. 4 Hilo (15-2), the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion. The four seeds receive a first-round bye and begin play on Thursday.

Other teams in the tournament are Mililani, Pearl City, Moanalua and Kailua of the OIA; Kealakehe and Konawaena of the BIIF; King Kekaulike of the MIL and Kapa'a of Kaua'i.

The championship game of the 12-team tournament is on Saturday.

SOFTBALL

Rainbow Wahine defeat Central Florida

The University of Hawai'i scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning en route to a 6-3 victory over Central Florida in the UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic at Las Vegas yesterday.

The Rainbow Wahine (4-3 overall) finished 1-2 in the tournament.

Central Florida took a 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Amber Lamb.

UH closed to 2-1 in the bottom of the first when Tracie Uchima scored on a ground ball by Tyleen Tausaga.

Hawai'i got five runs on five hits in the fourth, including a lead-off double by Tausaga and a two-run triple by Noelle Izumi.

The Rainbow Wahine were scheduled to play Nebraska earlier in the day, but the game was canceled because the Cornhuskers needed to catch a plane to Lincoln, Neb.



WATER POLO

Rainbow Wahine defeat UC Davis, 9-5

Monika Kruszona scored four goals to lift Hawai'i to a 9-5 victory over UC Davis in the final day day of the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif., yesterday.

UCLA defeated USC, 8-6, for the championship.

UH, ranked No. 7 in the nation, finished 1-2 in the tournament, 2-3 overall.

Earlier yesterday, the Rainbow Wahine lost to Cal, 8-6. In a late Friday match, Indiana beat UH, 8-7.



BASEBALL

HPU-Hilo rained out

A doubleheader yesterday between Hawai'i-Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific was canceled because of rain in Hilo.

The Vulcans (1-12) open a five-game series with Nebraska at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Wong Stadium.
