Niu Valley sewer main fixed

Advertiser Staff

Repairs to a ruptured 16-inch sewer main were finished early this morning on Kalaniana'ole Highway near Niu Valley and all lanes will be open for rush-hour commuters this afternoon, a city spokesman said.

Steel plates now cover a hole in the highway to allow traffic to pass.

Restoration of the highway will begin after workers encase the pipe in concrete, which will likely begin tomorrow and last well into next week before completion, said Herman Ellis, a district supervisor for the Department of Environmental Services.

Ellis said the road repairs will not affect rush-hour commuters.

Workers found several holes and cracks along the bottom of the pipe, which began leaking Monday afternoon, and replaced a five-foot section.

The 16-inch force main carries untreated sewage from the Niu Wastewater Pumping Station but workers shut down the station after the leak was reported. Pump trucks removed the groundwater and leaking wastewater as well as the idled pumping station. Those loads were emptied into the sewer system at Wailupe.
