Fishermen cited for net violation

Advertiser Staff

State enforcement officers cited two Kahalu'u men Feb. 11 for various fishing and net violations.

Responding to an anonymous tip about a gill net left in waters fronting Kualoa Beach, state Department of Land and Natural Resources officers and police monitored a gill net left in the waters longer than the four-hour limit and issued citations.

Officers found that a small green sea turtle had been caught in the net and died.

The men were issued citations for failure to inspect a gill net set in the water for more than two hours and failure to remove a gill net set in the water for more than a four-hour period, both petty misdemeanors punishable by a fine of up to $1,000.

To report a natural resource violation, call 587-0077 on O'ahu. Neighbor Island residents can dial "0" and ask for "Enterprise 5469" to be transferred to the DLNR hotline.
