UH hits road early, often

By Ferd Lewis

Four of the University of Hawai'i's first seven football games will be on the road this coming season, according to the schedule that has been circulated among — and approved by — Western Athletic Conference members.

2005 schedule

Tentative pending TV requests:

  • Sept. 3 — Southern California
  • Sept. 10 — At Michigan State
  • Sept. 24 — At Idaho
  • Oct. 1 — Boise State
  • Oct. 8 — At Louisiana Tech
  • Oct.15 — New Mexico State
  • Oct. 22 — At San Jose State
  • Oct. 29 — Fresno State
  • Nov. 5 — At Nevada
  • Nov. 12 — Utah State
  • Nov. 26 — Wisconsin
  • Dec. 3 — San Diego State
UH is scheduled to play at Michigan State, Idaho, Louisiana Tech and San Jose State before Halloween, matching the most road games the Warriors have played that early. The 2003 and 1995 seasons were the only ones in the previous 12 years in which UH also played four of its first seven away.

UH was 9-5 in 2003 and 4-8 in 1995. It has lost five consecutive road games dating to 2003.

Overall, UH will have seven home and five road games in 2005, with the Warriors also going to Nevada on Nov. 5.

A UH spokesperson said the school is holding off the official announcement of its schedule until deciding whether it will move the Sept. 3 opener against two-time defending national champion Southern California to Sept. 2, and the Nov. 26 game against Wisconsin to Nov. 25.

ESPN has asked UH to move the two games, both contracted as Saturday games, to Fridays to accommodate national telecasts.

At this point, indications are UH would be more likely to move the Wisconsin game, which comes during the Thanksgiving Day weekend. But the schools say no determination has been made.

Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State make their debuts as WAC members this season. Idaho was a non-conference opponent in 2004, but New Mexico State hasn't played UH since 1978 and Utah State is on the UH schedule for the first time since 1966.
