Wallace probes heart of problems

By Dayton Morinaga
Advertiser Staff Writer

The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team wants to prove that home is where the heart is.

The Rainbow Warriors will begin a three-game home stand by hosting Boise State tonight in a Western Athletic Conference game at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Hawai'i is 13-7 overall and in seventh place in the WAC at 5-7. Boise State is 10-14 overall and in eighth place at 4-9.

The 'Bows have lost five of their past eight games, so head coach Riley Wallace said he plans a "slight shake-up" in the lineup.

"We opened up the whole (starting lineup) this week," he said. "We're looking for the guys who are working the hardest, learning, and ready to go. We need to find guys with heart who want to win these close games that we've been losing."

Wallace did not want to specify any possible changes, saying it would be a game-time decision.

Senior forward Vaidotas Peciukas said he would like to take advantage of Wallace's challenge. Peciukas, who is averaging just 7.4 minutes per game, got some repetitions with the first team during yesterday's practice.

"Coach said everybody has a shot, and I want to play like everybody else," Peciukas said. "This is my senior year, so I want to do as much as I can to help the team win."

The 'Bows have used the same starting lineup for the past five games — "Little Matt" Gibson at point guard, Jake Sottos at shooting guard, Julian Sensley at small forward, Jeff Blackett at power forward, and Chris Botez at center.

"There could be five new starters out there (tonight), or it could be the same five, I don't know," Wallace said.

Sensley and Sottos have been the only consistent players in recent weeks, so they have more or less secured their spots.

"We need at least three guys to have a good game for us to win," Wallace said. "It's been a struggle to find three every night. We need more out of Julian, and Jake needs to keep shooting like he has been. But then we need to find a couple others to step up."

Starter or not, Peciukas should get more playing time tonight based on his recent performances against Boise State.

His career-high of 14 points came against the Broncos last season. In an 80-76 loss at Boise State last month, Peciukas scored 11.

"They like to run a lot and that's the kind of game I like," Peciukas said.

Wallace is concerned about Boise State's fast-break offense, and much of Hawai'i's last two practices have focused on defensive intensity.

"They ran all over us at their place," Wallace said.

Sensley said: "They move without the ball so well. If one guy gets a rebound, the other four are flying up the court trying to get an easy basket."

But Boise State has its own problems with consistency. The Broncos are 0-6 on the road against WAC teams this season. However, they are coming off an 82-68 upset of Fresno State last Saturday in Boise.

"We've had trouble handling success," Boise State head coach Greg Graham said. "Anytime we've played well, we struggled the next game."

Graham said he is most concerned about Hawai'i's size.

The Broncos' tallest player is 6-foot-8 center Tezarray Banks. Hawai'i can counter with at least four players 6-8 and taller (7-foot Botez, 6-9 Sensley, 6-9 "Big Matt" Gipson, and 6-8 Blackett).

"They're probably one of the best skilled big teams I've seen," Graham said. "I still think they got a chance to do some damage the rest of the season."

Boise State likes to compensate for its lack of size with a fast-paced offense and long-range shooting.

The Broncos lead the WAC with 180 3-pointers. Hawai'i has made 124.

But Hawai'i is 11-1 in the Stan Sheriff Center this season, and Boise State is 0-3 all-time in games played there.
