Today Hawai'i will welcome its first charter flight from Japan's new airport, Chubu International in Nagoya.

Japan's Chubu International Airport in Nagoya, built on a man-made island and equipped with an 11,550-foot runway, opens today. Its first charter flight to Hawai'i will arrive today at Kona International Airport.

Japanese tour operator JALPAK's charter flight will arrive at the Kona International Airport, where passengers will be greeted with hula dancers on the tarmac, flower lei and musicians. Big Island Visitors Bureau officials and others in the visitor industry will give passengers information about the Big Island, and for the first time, passengers will be able to shop duty free at the airport.

"We are ecstatic to be welcoming this flight from Chubu International Airport," said visitors bureau executive director George Applegate. "We look forward to developing this new Japan market and bringing more visitors to Hawai'i's Big Island from Nagoya and its surrounding areas."

Chubu will handle all Hawai'i flights that previously came out of the Nagoya International Airport.

Kona International Airport was chosen by Japan Airlines for the Nagoya charter flight because of its "unique Hawaiian arrival experience," the Big Island Visitors Bureau said.
