College fair set for April 26

Representatives from more than 100 Mainland and Hawai'i colleges and universities will be at the Honolulu National College fair April 26 at the Hawai'i Convention Center.

The free event, sponsored by the National Association for College Admission Counseling in conjunction with the Hawai'i Association for College Admission Counseling, is open to prospective college-bound freshmen, transfer students and families.

The fair also will have information on the new SAT exam, financial aid, admissions requirements and course offerings. Experts in the fair's counseling center will be available to discuss fields of study, course preparation and other issues based on students' individual needs.

Mililani to get new classrooms

Gov. Linda Lingle has released $670,500 to design a new classroom building at Mililani High School. The 10-classroom building will feature one science classroom, one special education classroom and eight general education classrooms.

The school's enrollment is expected to rise from 2,411 students to 2,567 next year, but the school's capacity now is 2,053. The total project cost is estimated at $6 million. Construction is anticipated to be completed in fall 2007.



Students join Honor Society

Kalakaua Middle School celebrated its 20th National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony yesterday.

Approximately 200 members have been inducted into the chapter since 1986.

Members of the society commemorated the event by unveiling a banner with all the society members' names. Former members, mostly Farrington High students, attended the ceremony.



Academy plans Feb. 26 lu'au

Academy of the Pacific is holding its 10th annual fund-raiser lu'au from 1 to 4 p.m. Feb. 26.

The event features Hawaiian food; a country store with baked goods, gift baskets and other goodies; student booths; games; activities and a Hawaiian artisan's fair. Entertainment will be provided by Kapena, Vaihi, Ellsworth Simeona and AOP musicians. The cost is $30 per person.

Writer to read at libraries

Travel writer and photographer Brandon Wilson will appear at three O'ahu libraries next week to read selections from "Yak Butter Blues." The book tells of Wilson's trek from Lhasa, Tibet, to Katmandu, Nepal.

He will appear at:

• Kailua Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

• Kapolei Public Library at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

• Hawai'i State Library at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

To request a sign language interpreter, call the host library five to seven days in advance.



Public libraries closed Monday

All public libraries will be closed Monday in observance of President's Day. Most libraries will reopen Tuesday, but some may have special holiday hours.
