Big Island man arrested after shots fired

Advertiser Staff

HILO, Hawai'i — Big Island police arrested a 25-year-old Hilo man suspected of firing shots at three state highway workers Wednesday.

The suspect was arrested at 10 p.m. Wednesday as he was walking along Hawai'i Belt Road, about three miles from the scene of the shooting earlier in the day. When officers confronted the man, he allegedly tried to pull a 9 mm semiautomatic handgun from his waistband, but police were able to subdue him.

In addition to the loaded gun, which had a laser sight, police said they also recovered a pipe used for smoking crystal methamphetamine.

The suspect was being held at the Kona police station.

The three highway workers were inspecting their base yard off the Hawai'i Belt Road in North Kona at about 9 a.m. when they encountered a man trying to remove a backhoe from the gated facility. When they chased him, he fired several shots at them, police said.

WINDWARD O'AHU

Three utility poles knocked down

Three utility poles were down after a car crash about midnight Wednesday on Kane-'ohe Bay Drive in front of Windward City Shopping Center.

Verizon spokeswoman Ann Nishida couldn't say how many customers were affected by the accident. Both directions of Kane'ohe Bay Drive were closed until about 2 a.m. yesterday, and the Kailua-bound lanes remained closed during the repairs.

An 18-year-old man was driving on Kane'ohe Bay Drive toward Honolulu in a 1985 Toyota when he lost control of the car, crossed the grass median and hit a pole, breaking it in half, police said. The broken pole dragged two other poles down with it.

Police said that the man failed a field sobriety test and they found marijuana in the car. He was arrested on drunken-driving and drug charges.
