Punahou junior midfielder Lizzy Carlson had never scored a goal like the one she did last night, but she picked the right time.

Moanalua's Cherie Hoshino positions herself to head the ball up field as Baldwin's Keisha Shishido closes in during an HHSAA girls' semifinal match at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Park. Moanalua won, 1-0.

Carlson scored and had an assist to lead two-time defending state champion Punahou past Pearl City, 2-0, in a quarterfinal game of the HHSAA/Meadow Gold Dairies Girls Soccer State Championship at the Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium last night.

Top-seeded Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Punahou (9-2-2) plays Mililani (12-1-2) tonight at 8 in one semifinal, a rematch of last year's championship game. O'ahu Interscholastic Association champ 'Aiea (13-1-1) plays Moanalua (9-2-4) in the other semifinal at 6 p.m.

"I think there's a little pressure; there's so much talk about how we shouldn't be seeded No. 1," said Carlson, who scored on a 25-yard free kick from the right side in the 31st minute.

"I never scored one like that," she said. "But we were practicing it at practice. Coach told me to kick it."

Junior defender Sophie Merrifield stepped over the ball to fake the kick, but Carlson shot the ball instead, fitting the ball into the space between the right side of the wall and the Pearl City goalkeeper, into the right side of the goal.

"I think they were setting up for Sophie to take the shot," Carlson said.

Sophomore midfielder/forward Marisa Schoen scored on a header off a corner kick by Carlson with one minute remaining. Schoen's header came off a save by the Pearl City goalkeeper, who batted another header by junior forward Ashley Nied into the air, but Schoen was crashing the goal.

"I was just thinking to head it down," Schoen said. "I just saw the upper part open.

"Before that it was 1-0, and anything could happen. It was reassuring (to score)."

Punahou dominated the first half early, with most of the game played on Pearl City's half of the field. The Chargers responded in the second half, playing the game more even, but couldn't crack Punahou's defense.

"We tried to set up differently," said Pearl City co-head coach Tracee Kono, who said the Chargers lined up with two forwards instead of their usual three. "Last time we played with three forwards, we lost control of the center."

"We were a little lethargic, but we advanced and that is the main thing," Punahou coach Jorge Barbosa said. "Are we happy with (our play)? Of course not. But we'll take it."

Mililani 2, Hilo 0: Mililani made quick work of Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Hilo, scoring three first-half goals.

Mililani (12-1-1) senior forward Sarah Yoro scored in the sixth minute, after receiving a pass from senior midfielder Marisa Belaski-Farias in the space between the right sideline and the border of the 18-yard box. Yoro cut the ball back to her left foot and curled a shot into the far left side of the goal.

Sophomore midfielder Natalie Wong scored in the 20th minute after receiving a pass from sophomore midfielder Stephanie Yoro and putting a 25-yard shot into the top of the goal.

Junior midfielder Jamie Ann Ching scored in the 28th minute after receiving a long ball from sophomore defender Jasmine Pratt, slotting the ball under the Hilo (15-3) goalkeeper.

'Aiea 3, Konawaena 0: Senior midfielder/defender Kelli-Ann Chang, senior defender Tehane Higa and junior forward Ambree Ako scored as Na Ali'i (13-1-1) advanced to the semifinals for the fourth straight year.

Chang scored in the 28th minute after receiving a pass from Ako from the left side of the field, beating two defenders and shooting into the right side of the goal from just inside the 18-yard box.

Higa scored on a penalty kick into the left side of the goal with just over a minute left in the half after junior midfielder Jaecie Kato was taken down in the penalty box.

Ako scored four minutes into the second half on a shot from just beyond the 18-yard box.

Konawaena dropped to 12-6.

Moanalua 1, Baldwin 0: Freshman forward Alyssa Moniz scored a second-half goal to lift the Menehunes (9-2-4) into the state semifinals for the first time in at least 10 years.

Moniz scored on a slow, dribbling header that cut just inside the right post, on a 30-yard free kick from sophomore midfielder Ayasha Abut from the right side of the field in the 46th minute.

The third-seeded Bears (9-2-0), the Maui Interscholastic League champion, had several chances on crosses and throw-ins. Their best was on a shot by midfielder Maris Van Der Lee that hit the post in the 23rd minute.

Consolation

Kealakehe 2, Kailua 1: Waveriders' (14-5) defender Jaimie Ferner scored in the 13th minute and defender Laura Franke in the 51st minute. Kailua (9-3-3) midfielder Michele Yoshida scored in the 17th minute, as the Surfriders were eliminated from the tournament.

King Kekaulike 1, Kapa'a 0: Na Ali'i (7-4-1) midfielder Kelli Ganiko scored, eliminating the Warriors (5-3-2) from the tournament.
