As the Honolulu Academy of Arts opened a groundbreaking exhibit on rice as a cultural and spiritual force in Asia, Islanders were pondering the place of rice in their own lives and hearts.

Two hundred and thirteen Advertiser readers recorded their thoughts in extraordinarily well-written essays, poems and memory pieces entered in The Advertiser's Island Art of Rice writing contest.

Three winning writings, and one honorable mention, are being published today.

We could have given awards to several dozen others. The telling detail, the recall of times long past, the sentiments expressed and perception shown and the general quality of the writing was well above the usual quality.

The winners receive various prizes, including free admission to the Academy exhibit and yearlong Academy memberships; such rice-related prizes as a multi-course kaiseki dinner at Kacho restaurant, courtesy of the Waikiki Parc Hotel; and bags of rice and grocery gift certificates. Enjoy.
