A promising new addition to the Lihu'e art scene is the nonprofit Kaua'i Recycling for the Arts. A sizeable grant from the county recycling office and the state Department of Health and Solid Waste launched this hot-glass studio at the Lihu'e recycling facility.

Here, three new large kilns make art objects out of the tons of glass that pass through the recycling center.

Kathy Cowan, one of the executive directors, speaks highly of the many volunteers, workshops and hands-on activities available to the community at the facility. Artists are now marketing their products made from recycled jalousie glass (sushi and soap dishes and platters.) They also make earrings, drawer pulls and vases.

Their new "Hands in the Sand" project is stirring up quite a bit of interest. It is now possible, for a nominal fee, to sand-cast your baby's or the entire family's handprints in soft, light-green-tinted glass — a beautiful alternative to the plaster and bronze versions.

The facility also is sponsoring a class in hot-glass sculpting, and a goblet-making workshop with Brian Kerkvliet from Bellingham, Wash., April 15-17.
