'OHANA BRIEFS
Kitchen staples great shower gifts

Knight Ridder News Service

If you're hosting a wedding shower for a couple just starting out, consider this idea from the Dollar Stretcher Newsletter: Have guests bring staples that relate to their initials.

If your initials are JCP, you could bring jelly, Campbell's soup and paprika. If your initials are HMV, the items could be Hershey's chocolate, mustard and vinegar.

The couple will end up with a good supply of staples, which can be expensive to purchase all at once.

Rename foods your kids dislike

Kids won't eat tapioca?

You could try calling it "bubble pudding," and they just might.

Nutritionists suggest tempting picky youngsters with new names for old-fashioned, good-for-you foods.

Pork and beans might not sound terribly appealing to them, but "camping beans" might. Call a muffin a cupcake. Yogurt smoothies are milkshakes. Broccoli florets can be "trees."
