Sobriety checks in place over holiday

Honolulu police are reminding motorists that checkpoints will be set up during the Presidents Day weekend to deter alcohol- and drug-impaired drivers.
Checkpoints will be set up at unannounced times and locations through Tuesday.
As of Friday, 10 people have died on O'ahu this year in traffic accidents compared with 15 deaths during the same time period last year, police said. One of the fatalities was alcohol- or drug-related and four collisions involved speeding, according to police.
County police departments and the state take part in the federal "52/12" program to stop impaired drivers. From October 2004 to September 2005, police will conduct at least one sobriety checkpoint every week.
