Advertiser Staff

Five people were left homeless after a fire destroyed their Pearl City home at about 8 p.m. yesterday.

No one was at the house at 1878 Ho'olaule'a St. when the fire started, but two adults and three children under 10 years old live there, according to fire department spokesman Capt. Kenison Tejada.

A neighbor noticed the fire and called 911 at 8:09 p.m., Tejada said. By 8:18 the fire was under control.

The kitchen and dining area were destroyed and the entire house sustained smoke and water damage. Damage was estimated at $190,000 to the building and $50,000 to the contents.

A dog was killed in the fire, but another dog and a cat survived, Tejada said. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
