Scoring spree no consolation for Gibson

 •  Predatory Panthers steal win from Hawai'i
 •  UTEP routs Rainbow Wahine, 71-50
 •  Ferd Lewis: 'Bows fall flat during prime time

"Little Matt" Gibson didn't want to hear any talk about career-high points or 3-point records yesterday.

MATT GIBSON

Not after the University of Hawai'i men's basketball team suffered an 87-81 loss to Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a nationally televised game on ESPN Bracket Buster Saturday.

"I didn't think I played too well," Gibson said. "To say I played good is not what I would say. Three turnovers — no good. One assist — no good."

But Gibson did keep Hawai'i close by scoring a career-high 26 points. He also tied a school record for 3-point field goal percentage by shooting 6 for 6 from beyond the arc (teammate Jake Sottos also went 6 for 6 in a game earlier this season).

He scored 14 points in the second half, including 11 after the 'Bows fell behind 68-54 with just over nine minutes remaining.

"Shooting-wise, I shot the ball OK and picked up the team offensively when we needed some," Gibson said. "But it wasn't enough."

Hawai'i head coach Riley Wallace said: "For the most part, he was within what we wanted to do. He always makes mistakes and things, but I can't recall anything that I would get on him about his game tonight."

Gibson, a 6-foot-5 sophomore, has been Hawai'i's top offensive threat recently. He is averaging 19.0 points and has made 17 3-pointers in his last five games.

Tucker wins battle of Milwaukee cousins

UWM forward Joah Tucker finally got the better of Hawai'i guard Deonte Tatum. They are cousins who grew up together in Milwaukee.

Tucker finished with seven points and seven rebounds. Tatum had two points and five rebounds.

Tatum's Vincent High beat Tucker's Glendale Nicolet High twice when they were on opposing prep teams.

The cousins will get to meet again next season when Hawai'i plays a "return" game at Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
