BYUH ties UH-Hilo for first in PacWest

Brigham Young-Hawai'i's basketball team shot a blazing 69 percent from the field to defeat Montana State Billings, 118-84, and move into a tie in the Pacific West Conference last night at Cannon Activities Center in La'ie.

The Seasiders are 15-7 overall and 10-3 in the PacWest. Hawai'i-Hilo also is 10-3. The Yellowjackets are 16-8 overall and 8-6 in the PacWest.

Jake Chrisman hit 13 of 16 field-goal attempts for a game-high 32 points as the Seasiders shot 69 percent (44 of 64), including 70 percent (26 of 37) in the second half. The Seasiders hit 11 of 16 3-point attempts for the game.

Chrisman also had a game-high 10 rebounds.

BYUH led 52-29 at halftime.

Thomas Watkins added 22 points, including 4 of 4 3-pointers. Michael Stowell had 15 points and Austin Smylie 13 points for BYUH.



Hawai'i Pacific rolls past W. New Mexico

Dante Sykes scored 18 points and Audrius Peciukas and Alex Swerzbin added 16 each to lead Hawai'i Pacific to a 82-63 Pacific West Conference basketball victory over Western New Mexico at Mid-Pacific gym yesterday.

Hawai'i Pacific is 10-3 overall and 4-9 in the PacWest. Western New Mexico is 6-9 and 1-13.

Peciukas added 13 rebounds for the Sea Warriors.

HPU led 31-25 at halftime.

Matt Enriquez scored 18 for the Mustangs.



Baseball

HPU, Somona State split doubleheader

Bryan Daguio singled to drive in Jay Baptista in the fifth inning to lift Hawai'i Pacific to a 2-1 victory over Sonoma State in the first game of a doubleheader at Ke'ehi Lagoon field.

Sonoma State won the second game, 3-1.

HPU is 8-5, Sonoma is 7-6.

In the first game, Pierce Manglallan allowed six hits in a seven-inning complete game performance. He struck out five and walked two.

With the score tied at 1 in the fifth inning, Baptista doubled, and went to third on a ground out by Jherell Miller. Baptista then scored on Daguio's single to left.

In the second game, the Seawolves scored two runs in the top of the eighth and extra inning to break a 1-all tie.



Nebraska beats UHH, remains undefeated

Nebraska scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie en route to a 6-3 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium yesterday.

Nebraska is 4-0, UH-Hilo 1-16.

Gary Ahu Jr. went 2 for 3 for the Vulcans.



SOFTBALL

Rain cancels UH game at Arizona tournament

Hawai'i is scheduled to play top-ranked Arizona today after yesterday's games of the Worth Wildcat Invitational were canceled because of rain at Tucson, Ariz.

After a 30-minute delay, the Rainbow Wahine (5-4) were set to start their game against Marshall. But after the playing of the National Anthem, the rain returned and all games for the day were canceled.

The UH-Wildcats (7-0) game is set for noon Hawai'i time.



UH-Hilo sweeps two from BYU-Hawai'i

Hawai'i-Hilo swept Brigham Young-Hawai'i a non-conference doubleheader at BYUH Field in La'ie yesterday.

The Vulcans' Leo Sing Chow pitched a one-hitter in a 2-0 victory in the first game.

Charity Senas hit a grand slam to spur the Vulcans' 5-2 victory in the second game.
