UTEP stops Rainbow Warriors, 71-67

Associated Press

Omar Thomas scored 27 points to lead Texas-El Paso to a 71-67 victory over Hawai'i tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.

With the score tied at 62 with just under four minutes to go in the game, UTEP (21-7, 11-4 Western Athletic Conference) went on a 7-2 run, including four points from Thomas, to give the Miners some space.

After Hawai'i's Jake Sottos completed a 3-point play to close to 69-67, Miner Giovanni St. Amant made two free throws with 12.6 seconds remaining to seal the four-point victory for UTEP.

Sottos led Hawai'i (14-9, 6-8) with 15 points. Jeff Blackett added 12 points and Julian Sensley had 11 for the Rainbow Warriors.

Hawai'i turned the ball over a season-low four times, but committed a critical turnover with 30 seconds remaining when Deonte Tatum missed teammate Sensley and threw the ball into the Hawai'i bench.

Filiberto Rivera added 15 points for UTEP and St. Amant had 11.

The Miners made 11 of their first 15 shots of the game to lead by as many as 11 points in the first half.
