Police believe the man, whom they identified as Eugene Wilkerson, was working on the frontloader's engine when its transmission engaged accidentally, causing the loader's wheels to move and fling Wilkerson to the ground.

Before he could get out of the way, one of the frontloader's tires, which measure approximately five feet in diameter, ran over Wilkerson's head and chest, police said.

He was flown to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition and died there later from his injuries.

Burns claim woman's life

A 78-year-old Waialua woman died at The Queen's Medical Center Saturday from burns she suffered Feb. 15 while at home.

The woman's adult son told police he entered the home about 5:30 p.m. and found his mother sitting in a chair on fire.

The son said he used a blanket to smother the fire, which investigators said might have been started by a lighted cigarette.

The woman was flown to Queen's for treatment of her burns following the fire.

Grandmother's call leads to grandson's arrest

A 20-year-old Waimanalo man was arrested yesterday after his grandmother called police about 7:30 a.m. to report her grandson was carrying a gun.

Police who responded to the call found the man and recovered a handgun. When the man was searched as part of the arrest procedure, police reported find drugs and a drug pipe on him.

Police then arrested the man on suspicion of failing to properly store a firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, third-degree promotion of a detrimental drug and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police arrest man hiding in car

A 30-year-old man was arrested at a home on the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station yesterday after a resident reported finding the man hiding in the resident's car, which was parked in the driveway in front of his home

The man ran from the car but was found nearby by police officers, who arrested him on suspicion of unlawful entry of a motor vehicle.
