Clay and Kamana'o 2004's top athletes

Olympic silver medalist Bryan Clay and Hawai'i volleyball All-American Kanoe Kamana'o were honored as the Sportspersons of 2004 last night at the Honolulu Quarterback Club's annual Banquet of Champions at the Ala Moana Hotel.

Clay, who placed second in the decathlon at the Athens Games, and Kamana'o, a sophomore setter for the Rainbow Wahine, also were honored as the adult athletes of the year.

Derrick Low, former Iolani basketball standout now at Washington State, was chosen prep male athlete for the third year in a row.

  • Nancy Hoist, Konawaena basketball — prep female athlete of the year.
  • Derrick Low, Iolani basketball — prep male athlete of the year.
  • Kanoe Kamana'o, UH volleyball — adult female athlete of the year.
  • Bryan Clay, U.S. decathlete — adult male athlete of the year.
  • Mollie Chang, age group winner at the Boston Marathon — senior female athlete of the year.
  • Jerry Fasteen, five-time gold medalist at the Hawai'i Senior Olympics — senior male athlete of the year.
  • Kanoe Kamana'o, UH volleyball — female sportsperson of 2004.
  • Bryan Clay, U.S. decathlete — male sportsperson of 2004.
  • Gerald Oda, coordinator of Mustang Division of PAL — Scotty Schumann Award.
  • James Barahal, Honolulu Marathon Association president — Neal Shaw Blaisdell Award.
  • Lydia Lake, volunteer — Joe Reynolds Award.
  • Dave Shoji, UH volleyball — George Archer coach of the year.



SOFTBALL

Top-ranked Arizona takes two from UH

Kristie Fox's sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning lifted No. 1-ranked Arizona to a 2-1 victory over Hawai'i yesterday in the Worth Wildcat Invitational at Tucson, Ariz.

The Wildcats (9-0) won the first game of the doubleheader, 4-0.

Fox's RBI drive came off Melissa Coogan, who was locked in a pitcher's duel with Wildcat ace Alicia Hollowell.

Hollowell pitched a four-hitter with 17 strikeouts and no walks. Tracie Uchima's leadoff homer in the sixth was only the third extra-base hit given up by Hollowell in eight appearances this season.

Coogan gave up six hits, walked two and struck out three.

Taryne Mowatt pitched a three-hitter with eight strikeouts over 5¡ innings to win the opener. Uchima singled and doubled for the Rainbow Wahine (5-6).



Hawai'i Pacific splits with UH-Hilo

Brandi Peiler spaced seven hits as Hawai'i Pacific held off Hawai'i-Hilo, 4-3, yesterday to salvage a split of a doubleheader at Sea Warrior Field.

Kara Wedemeyer, Jamie Reyes and Lia Pedrina each had two hits for HPU (3-1).

Losing pitcher Leo Sing Chow had two hits and an RBI for Hilo (4-2).

Hilo won the opener, 6-2, behind Sarah Steele's five-hit pitching.

Lisa Jackson and Chelsea Osborne had two hits apiece and Brittany Dock had two RBIs for Hilo.

Reyes batted 3 for 3 for HPU.



BASEBALL

Nebraska completes sweep of UH-Hilo

Bryce Nimmo had three hits and Brandon Fusilier and Trey Adams each had two RBIs as Nebraska beat Hawai'i-Hilo, 8-1, yesterday at Wong Stadium to complete a five-game series sweep.

Phil Shirek, Jon Klausing and Luke Wertz teamed on a six-hitter for the Cornhuskers (5-0).

David Chu and Johnny Dudoit had two hits apiece for the Vulcans (1-17).
