Former UH receiver will play in Frankfurt

Former University of Hawai'i wide receiver Jeremiah Cockheran will play for the Frankfurt Galaxy of NFL Europe this spring.

JEREMIAH COCKHERAN

Cockheran, who is under contract with the NFL's Cincinnati Bengals, was assigned to Frankfurt.

The Bengals "want to see what I can do," said Cockheran, who completed his UH eligibility after the 2003 Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl.

Cockheran suffered a torn rotator cuff in his left shoulder during that game, an injury that prevented him from receiving medical clearance with the Bengals. The Bengals re-signed Cockheran as a free agent in December.

"I'm pretty juiced about the whole situation," Cockheran said.

In addition to free room, board and transportation, Cockheran will receive a stipend of $900 per week. In July, he will report to the Bengals' training camp.

Cockheran said he has successfully completed a rehabilitation program from the shoulder surgery. Cockheran, who is 6 feet 1, now weighs 189 pounds.

"I was up to 212, but that was all fat-guy stuff," he said.

With the Bengals, he is competing to back up wideout Chad Johnson.

"The rest did him well," said Ron Lee, who coaches the UH receivers. "He had nagging injuries most of his (UH) career — ankles, knees, shoulders. The rest made him focus. I like how he's focusing on making the next level. He's worked hard. He looks a lot quicker and stronger."
