For the first time on any level, Maryknoll can call itself softball champions.

The Spartans intermediate team, which also had players from Hawai'i Baptist, University, Word of Life and La Pietra, went 9-0 to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu title. Maryknoll does not field a junior varsity team.

"It was a combination of a lot of things. First and foremost, we had girls who just didn't quit. In 3-4 games we were down 3-4 runs. One game we were down 9-2 (against Sacred Hearts) and we won that (11-9). It seemed like destiny," said John Uekawa, Maryknoll intermediate's first-year coach.

Maryknoll clinched the title with key victories down the stretch. It defeated Kamehameha, 5-2, in its seventh game and won the title by beating Iolani, 6-2. Had it lost to Iolani, Kamehameha, Iolani and Maryknoll all would have had 8-1 records and a playoff would have been required. Kamehameha finished second at 8-1, Iolani third at 7-2.

When the last out was recorded on a groundout to short, "I think everybody jumped up, parents, players and coaches," Uekawa said. "It was half that and half shock ... (you) gotta know where we came from and how far we came."
