Rising housing and transportation costs helped boost consumer prices in Honolulu by 3.3 percent in the second half of 2004 compared to the same period a year earlier. The rise in Honolulu's consumer price index outpaced increases of 3.0 percent for the nation and 2.7 percent for the West region, according to Richard Holden, regional commissioner for the U.S. Department of Labor.
Housing and transportation were responsible for more than three-fourths of the increase in the Honolulu index, Holden said.
The housing index rose 4.6 percent, while the transportation index rose 3.9 percent. Within transportation, the gasoline sub-index rose 13.8 percent.
