QUICK BITES
Serve it up in Kapi'olani college's culinary series

Advertiser Staff

Alyssa Moreau
Kapi'olani Community College's spring noncredit culinary series is under way through May. Individual sessions or a group of classes are available. They include chef-instructor Grant Sato's popular basics courses, caterer Alyssa Moreau's classes on healthful vegetarian cooking (main-dish salads and cooking with noodles) and chef-instructor Nina Jarrett's sessions on entertaining and grilling.

A new Middle Eastern course, introduced at the request of past students, is taught by Magdy Elzoheiry, a KCC culinary program graduate who is originally from Egypt and who worked at the late, lamented Hajibaba and The Pyramids. Upcoming Saturday-morning classes in this series include Egyptian Cuisine, this Saturday; Lebanese Cuisine, March 12; Persian Cuisine, April 2; and North African Vegetarian Table, April 16.

Classes are small, and they fill up quickly.

The Travel Channel's "epicurious" series spent a few days on the Big Island last month shooting a feature on Kona coffee, Hawaiian vanilla, Island chocolate and contemporary cuisine in Hawai'i. The show features Kona Lea Plantation, the Hawaiian Vanilla Co. and the Original Hawaiian Chocolate Factory. Chef Alan Wong is interviewed. And the cameras visit a Kona coffee tasting at the Hilton Waikoloa Village's Malolo Lounge.

Chef Michael Lomonaco hosts the show, which airs weekdays at 4 a.m., 6 a.m., 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on Oceanic cable on O'ahu. The Big Island segment is expected to air in late March.
