Frazier passes up bonus money

By Ferd Lewis

University of Hawai'i athletic director Herman Frazier has voluntarily waived several thousand dollars in bonuses he would have been due, an athletic department spokesperson said.

Frazier confirmed he hasn't taken advantage of the terms of his 2002 contract, saying he didn't feel it was appropriate while the department he headed was running back-to-back million-dollar deficits. "That's the kind of person I am," Frazier said.

"Though Mr. Frazier has qualified for bonuses under the terms of his contract, he has elected to waive those benefits," Lois Manin, the department's sports information director, said in response to a question from The Advertiser.

Frazier receives a salary of $210,000 plus "reasonable expenses incurred in the performance of his duties...", according to the contract.

Frazier could have received $7,500 if the football team wins a bowl game and UH makes money on its participation. In addition there are provisions to pay him a sum equivalent of half the amount of Rainbow Wahine volleyball coach Dave Shoji's monthly pay if UH makes the NCAA Tournament.

UH has appeared in the Sheraton Hawai'i Bowl the past three seasons and the Rainbow Wahine have gone to three consecutive NCAA Tournaments on Frazier's watch.
