Daniel garners softball honor

Portland State sophomore outfielder Kimi Daniel was named the Pacific Coast Softball Conference Player of the Week for the week ending Feb. 13.

Daniel, a Sacred Hearts graduate from Kane'ohe, started four games at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Feb. 10 through 12, and batted .333 (4 for 12) with her first career home run and three RBIs.

Her first hit of the weekend, a single against host UNLV, was the first base hit of her career. She handled all eight chances in the field.

Portland State travels to Hawai'i next week to play in the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament, hosted by the University of Hawai'i.

Also in the tournament is California, featuring senior outfielder Kaleo Eldredge (Baldwin '01 of Wailuku).



More Softball

• Utah freshman shortstop Sharee Fonoti (Kamehameha '04) batted 2 for 4 with three RBIs and hit her first collegiate home run in a 10-3 win over Utah Valley State Feb. 5.



Men's wrestling

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) sophomore Aaron Fernandez (Kamehameha of Lanai City) finished second in the 125-pound weight class, leading Pacific to a sixth-place finish at the 2005 Great Lakes Regional Saturday.

Fernandez was passed over for a wild card position by the region's coaches for the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships.

He won by major decision (15-7) against Concordia's Kevin McBride in the first round; defeated North Central's Kyle Anderson, 5-2, in the quarterfinals; and beat St. John's Nathan Schraan, 4-2, in the semifinals, but lost by a technical foul to Augsburg's Matt Shankey, 15-0 (2:36) in the championship.

• Hutchinson Community College (Kansas) freshman guard Karla Tailele (Kahuku '04) scored 12 points in a 52-50 victory over Barton County Saturday.

Tailele, who had three 3-pointers, received a kick-out pass and drilled a 3-pointer with 1:18 to go to cut the Barton lead to 48-47, then made two free throws with 27 seconds left for a 51-48 lead.

• Menlo (Atherton, Calif.) freshman Kepua Lee (Moanalua '04 of Honolulu) registered her third double-double of the season, with a team-high 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, in a 60-52 win over Bethany College Saturday night.

Junior guard Shannon Riley (Maryknoll '02) scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds.

Lee scored 14 points, and Riley had nine points and five rebounds in a 67-48 win over William Jessup Friday.



Men's Basketball

• Pacific (Forest Grove, Ore.) junior guard Branden Kawazoe (Waiakea of Hilo) scored a season-high 23 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 5 of 5 from 3-point range, in an 82-76 loss to Whitworth Saturday.



Men's Tennis

• Swarthmore College (Pa.) freshman Jonathan Lo (Iolani '04) rallied from an opening set loss and saved a match point to pull out a 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 victory over Temple's Elad Ziv at No. 4 singles Feb. 12.

Lo and Justin Durand lost to Matt Struble and Ziv, 8-4, at No. 2 doubles.



Men's Volleyball

• Hunter College (New York) freshman setter Brandon Caban (Mililani '04) had 49 assists and nine digs in a 3-1 victory over Johnson & Wales Feb. 11.

He had 65 assists in a 3-1 win over City Tech Feb. 15 and 34 in a 3-0 over Medgar Evers Feb. 17.

Caban made the "Athletic-Directors Academic List of Excellence," for Hunter student-athletes with grade point averages 3.2 or better.



Gymnastics

• Maryland senior Mandy Pascual (Punahou '01 of 'Aiea) tied for second with a score of 9.775 on the uneven bars in a meet against Pittsburgh Saturday.

• Washington senior Tacia LaBatte (Castle '00) scored a 9.700 for fourth in the vault and a 9.775 for third in the bars in a meet against California Friday.
