Fishing boat tugged free off Kewalo

By David Waite

A 56-foot fishing boat was pulled free this morning after it went aground off Kewalo Basin.

The steel-hulled fishing vessel Jane got stuck at 1 a.m. about 100 feet off a rock and concrete pier on the diamond-head side of the basin channel.

The tug American Emerald worked the fishing boat free at about 8:40 a.m.

The Coast Guard said five people were aboard the boat, but there were no reported injuries.

The fishing boat was carrying about 1,000 gallons of fuel oil and 7,000 pounds of fish, but none of the load polluted the channel.

The incident was the second grounding off O'ahu in recent weeks. On Feb. 2, the bulk carrier Cape Flattery went aground off Barbers Point, damaging a wide area of coral before it was freed after eight days.
