Volcano man, 57, dies in accident

HILO, Hawai'i — A 57-year-old Volcano man was killed Wednesday in a crash on the Hawai'i Belt Road in Pana'ewa.

Michael Nelson was headed toward Hilo at about 3:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 1993 Jeep Wrangler, police said. The vehicle ran off the left side of the road and overturned a half-mile south of the 4-mile marker.

Nelson was wearing a seatbelt, but was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at 8:30 p.m. at Hilo Medical Center. Police said speed and alcohol are believed to have been factors in the crash.



Military convoys to begin today

Military convoys will be on the move from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow and Sunday along the H-1 and H-2 freeways from Ford Island to Schofield Barracks and Helemano Military Reservation.

Army police are working with Honolulu police to coordinate the movements, but the convoys may cause some delays and motorists are asked to be alert and careful.



Police seeking parole violator

Law enforcement officials are asking for the public's help in locating a man who is wanted on a parole retake warrant.

Robert J. Gouveia Jr., 35, has eight felony convictions for kidnapping, armed robbery, sex assault, theft and escape. He has been seen in 'Ewa Beach and the downtown Honolulu areas and should be considered dangerous, police said.

Gouveia, who also answers to Bobby, is 5 feet 7, 160 pounds with shaved black hair, brown eyes, a mustache and slight beard. Police said he also has tattoos on both arms.

Anyone with information on Gouveia is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.



Family Court seeks assistance

The Family Court is recruiting volunteers to serve as guardians ad litem and parent facilitators to represent the best interests of children in abuse or neglect proceedings.

A training is scheduled five consecutive Saturdays beginning April 16.

Guardians ad litem are responsible for keeping the court informed about the child and the progress of any services provided to the child's family. They submit written recommendation and attend court hearings. Call Rob Brede at 538-5930.

Autism group holding run, fete

The Cure Autism Now Foundation will hold its second annual 5K walk and family festival at 8:30 a.m. March 12 at Magic Island in Ala Moana Park to raise money for research into finding the cause and effective treatments for the disease.

The foundation is looking for teams to sign up and sponsor walkers. Last year, 300 walkers and 100 volunteers raised $40,000 for the effort.

The event is free to anyone who wants to join in and will include a carnival, arts and crafts, and a community resource fair.

Kaiser High plans fund-raiser

Kaiser High School will host a fund-raiser sunset dinner and Kaiser idol music competition from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 4 at the school athletic field. The event is planned by the Friends of Kaiser Parent Teacher Student Association.

Sponsored by Outback Steakhouse, the sunset dinner will feature a music competition, plant sale and a silent auction. Bring your beach chair, blanket or mat.

The cost is $20 for dinner. Only 500 tickets are available. Tickets are being sold in advance at the school, or call Sylvia Lee at 377-1306.



Celebrating women's history

Windward Community College will present a series of free activities on campus in March in celebration of Women's History Month.

The public is welcome to attend the Thursday lectures from 12:30 p.m. to 1:20 p.m., Wednesday movies at 1:30 p.m. in the student lounge and a talent hour from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. March 16 in the student lounge.

The lectures begin March 3 in 'Akoakoa Room 105 with Paula Scatoloni, from the Anorexia and Bulimia Center of Hawai'i, and Maureen Barcia exploring the impact of social pressure and the media on women's experience of their bodies. The following week on March 10 at the same location Gary Francell, a consultant for couples and businesses, will discuss interpersonal relationships between men and women.

On March 17 in the Paliku Theatre, Mazie Hirono will talk about her life — born in Japan, emigrated to Hawai'i and elected lieutenant governor of the state. Finally on March 31 in 'Akoakoa Room 105, Gloria Moore will lecture on health issues related to women through their life stages.

The films are: March 2, "Elizabeth;" March 9, "Frida;" March 16, "The Hours" and March 30, "Heart of the Sea," about Rell Sunn, who paved the way for women's professional surfing.

Three day carnival in Waimanalo

Waimanalo will host a carnival this weekend at Waimanalo Beach Park, offering local entertainers such as Jordan Segundo, B.E.T. and Kapena.

Rides, games and food will be available from 6 p.m. to midnight today, from 11:30 a.m. to midnight tomorrow and from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Today's entertainment features Inoa'ole, Koa'uka, Segundo and Natural Vibrations.

Finalists chosen for campus plan

Four development teams have been selected as finalists to submit proposals for Phase I of a new University of Hawai'i-West O'ahu campus in Kapolei.

They are:

• Actus Lend Lease LLC, teamed with A&B properties Inc. of Honolulu.

• Concord Eastridge Inc. of Phoenix.

• Hunt ELP Ltd. of El Paso, Texas, and Honolulu.

• UniDev, LLC of Bethesda, Md.

The proposals will be evaluated by the university, and one will be recommended to the UH Board of Regents for approval at its April meeting.
