In the second half, he took over.

Pape, a 6-foot-1 senior swing man, scored 11 consecutive Raiders' points midway through the third period as top-seeded Iolani beat Kalaheo, 64-49, last night in the quarterfinals of the HHSAA/Hawaiian Airlines Boys State Basketball Championship at Blaisdell Arena.

The run by Pape included two three-point plays, a field goal and a 3-pointer. The rally allowed the Raiders to turn a 29-27 deficit into a 38-33 lead.

"Our offense, it really helped that Kyle put us on his shoulders for a little while there," Iolani coach Mark Mugiishi said.

Iolani, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, will play Campbell of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association at 6 p.m. today. Iolani (15-0) is the three-time defending state champion.

Pape scored 22 of his 31 points in the second half. He finished 8 of 14 from the field and 14 of 15 from the free-throw line.

"At halftime, our coaches told us it was do or die," Pape said. "Each game in the state tournament you're just one loss away from ending your season."

Vinny Nip added 11 points and Kawika Shoji 10 for the Raiders.

Pape headed to the bench after picking up his third foul with one minute left before halftime.

"My defense was a little bit too intense," Pape said. "I calmed down in the second half and got my head together."

Mugiishi said Pape struggled in the first half defending David Moore, a slasher who finished with 19 points.

In the second half, Pape defended another player and didn't pick up a foul.

The Raiders' largest lead was 61-43 with 1:15 remaining in the game.

"We kind of got jump-shot happy and couldn't hit anything," Mustangs coach Chico Furtado said.

Kalaheo went 10 of 11 from the free-throw line in the first half, and Iolani was 5 of 7. In the second half, Iolani was 14 of 17 and Kalaheo went 6 of 6.

The differential in the second half didn't sit well with Furtado.

"As good as they are it's very difficult to overcome a 14-6 foul differential," he said. "I would have liked to have visited the free-throw line just as much as they did in the second half."

Iolani led 17-12 after the first quarter, but committed 10 turnovers in the second as Kalaheo (12-4), the OIA third-place team, went up 27-25 at halftime.
