Event to raise funds for scholarships

Two Hawai'i athletes with physical disabilities will receive scholarships after the first annual Swim With Mike Hawai'i event on March 5 at the University of Hawai'i's Duke Kahanamoku Pool.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Fulutusi Tusi Mailo, a Brigham Young-Hawai'i student, and Keith Kitamura, a University of Hawai'i student, will receive the scholarships.

Mailo was a linebacker at Kahuku High School before being injured in the ocean and being paralyzed. Kitamura was a senior at Kapa'a when he was left a quadriplegic after a car accident.

The swimmers will be UH student-athletes and coaches.

The program began in 1981 to aid USC swimmer Mike Nyeholt, who was paralyzed after a motorcycle accident.

Since the first event, the fund-raiser has collected $5 million for 45 full scholarships.

This is the first time the Swim With Mike swim-a-thon will be held in Hawai'i.
