BYU-Hawai'i edges Chaminade, 104-102

Jake Chrisman scored 32 points and Austin Smylie 29 as Brigham Young-Hawai'i held off Chaminade, 104-102, last night in a Pacific West Conference men's basketball game at Cannon Center in La'ie.

Michael Stowell added 15 points and Thomas Watkins contributed 12 assists for the Seasiders, who shot a scorching 61.8 percent from the field (42 of 68) to improve to 16-8 overall and 11-4 in the PacWest.

Zack Whiting scored 30 points and Chris Reaves 25 for the Silverswords, who shot 60.4 percent (32 of 53), but fell to 15-11 overall and 8-7 in the PacWest.



SWIMMING AND DIVING

UH wins three events

The University of Hawai'i won three of five events yesterday, but Southern Methodist surged to a big lead at the Western Athletic Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships in San Antonio.

Winning their events for the Rainbow Wahine were: Nicole Mackey (400 individual medley in 1:58.90), Dena Quick (50 free in 22.58) and QiongJie Huang (1-meter diving with 323.90).

SMU has 332 points with UH second at 256 entering today's competition.



UH relinquishes lead

The University of Hawai'i men's team won two events, but saw its co-hold on first slip away as Southern Methodist scored big yesterday at the National Independent Conference Swimming and Diving Championships at Rochester, Mich.

UH sophomore Grzegorz Mroz won the 500 free in 4:22.94 and freshman Mats Wiktorsson took the 3-meter diving with 572.20 points.

SMU has 347.5 points with UH second at 284.5 entering today's competition.



WATER POLO

No. 1 UCLA tops UH

Kelly Rulon and Natalie Golda each scored three goals, lifting top-ranked UCLA to a 13-8 victory over No. 9 Hawai'i yesterday at Los Angeles.

UCLA is 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Lefke Van Belkum scored three goals for UH (2-5, 1-2).



GOLF

UH's Soero in eighth

University of Hawai'i sophomore Pierre-Henri Soero shot his second successive 3-under-par 69 yesterday and was in a six-way tie for eighth at the John Burns Intercollegiate Tournament at the Leilehua course.

New Mexico's Spencer Levin (67), UNLV's Ryan Moore (65) and Southern Methodist's Will Dodson (65) share the lead at 12-under 132.

New Mexico leads the 22-team field at 27-under 549. UH's A team is 12th at 1-under 575.
