New Mexico, UNLV's Moore win Burns golf

Nevada-Las Vegas' Ryan Moore shot an 8-under-par 64 yesterday en route to a 7-shot victory in the John Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Course.

Moore finished with a 54-hole total of 20-under 196. Three were tied at 203. Hawai'i's Pierre-Henri Soero shot a 68 yesterday to finish tied for sixth at 206.

New Mexico won the team title at 31-under 833. UNLV was second at 835 and Arizona third at 838. Hawai'i's "A" team was tied for 13th at 869 and its "B" team finished 21st at 900.



VOLLEYBALL

UH to host 'Huskers

The University of Hawai'i women's volleyball team will take on perennial powerhouse Nebraska in an exhibition set for Friday, March 18.

Season ticket holders will have priority to purchase their seats before tickets go on sale to the general public on March 8.

The Rainbow Wahine, who were 30-1 last season, return all starters and 14 of 17 letterwinners.

The match is 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.



BASEBALL

Wichita St. stops Hilo

Hawai'i-Hilo left the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning as Wichita State held on for a 10-8 victory at Simmons Field yesterday in Kailua, Kona.

Wichita State is 8-0, UH-Hilo 1-19.

With two outs in the ninth, UH-Hilo's Jimmy Crider doubled to left and Tyler Curtis walked to fill the bases. But Rob Musgrave got Gary Ahu Jr. to fly to left field to end the game.

Brandon Hall was 3 for 5, including four RBIs for the Shockers. Crider went 3 for 4 for the Vulcans.

The series continues today with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Simmons Field.



SWIMMING AND DIVING

Rainbows win 4 events

The University of Hawai'i women's swimming and diving team won three individual events and a relay to remain in second at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at San Antonio.

SMU is first with 607 points, followed by UH (466) and Nevada (352) going into today's final day.

UH's got victories from Nicole Mackey in the 400-yard individual medley (4 minutes, 12.94 seconds), Mia Broden in the 100 butterfly (57.76) and QiongJie Huang in the 3-meter diving (544 .85 points).

Mackey, who won with an automatic NCAA qualifying time, finished ahead of Kaiser alum Ashley Swart of the University of San Diego, who finished second in 4:19.11.

UH (Mackey, Katie Clewett, Broden and Melanie Schlanger) won the 400 medley relay in 3:40.28.



Hawai'i men in second

Thomas Winkler won the 100-yard backstroke and Hawai'i won the 400 medley relay yesterday at the National Independent Conference Championship at Rochester, Mich.

Southern Methodist leads the meet with 675.5 points, followed by UH (525.5), Oakland, Mich. (428) and South Dakota State (198).

Winkler won the 100 backstroke in 48.38 seconds, a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet. Winkler also teamed with Chad Thomsen, Joe Andrews and Graeme Tozer to win the 400 medley relay in 3:15.50, also a provisional qualifying time.



WATER POLO

UH upsets California

Ninth-ranked Hawai'i scored three goals in the third quarter en route to a 9-6 victory over No. 7 California last night at the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational women's tournament at Santa Barbara, Calif.

Iefke Van Belkum scored three goals to lift Hawai'i (4-5) to an 11-5 victory over Cal State Northridge.

Shannon Carroll, Beth Novick, Monika Kruszona and Stephanie Pottenger each scored two goals against Cal.

UH goalie Meike De Nooy had nine saves against Northridge and 10 against Cal.



TRACK AND FIELD

Rainbows eighth

The University of Hawai'i women were eighth out of nine teams after the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships at Nampa, Idaho.

Southern Methodist led with 49 points, followed by Fresno State (27) and Utah State (21). Hawai'i had nine points.

UH freshman Meghan Young finished fourth in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 10.75 inches. Louisiana Tech's Shaterika Allen won with a 48-7.25.

UH's Tasha Monroe finished fifth in the long jump in 19 feet, .5 inches. Bejide Williams of Louisiana Tech won with a jump of 20 feet, 5.75 inches.
