City joins national appeal of Meals on Wheels group

Advertiser Staff

Mayor Mufi Hannemann has proclaimed March "Meals on Wheels Month" at Honolulu Hale, dovetailing with the national awareness campaign of "March for Meals on Wheels."

Two Meals on Wheels programs on O'ahu, Lanakila Meals on Wheels and Hawai'i Meals on Wheels, have teamed with the city to bring public attention to the nutritional needs of seniors and the home-bound.

The Meals on Wheels Association of America created the March for Meals campaign in 2002 to call attention to the problem of senior citizen hunger in the United States. March is a good month for this campaign because it was during March 1972 that the law was enacted to include senior meal programs in the Older Americans Act.

Other events coming up include:

• A Honolulu City Council recognition of March for Meals Month on March 16.

• At 11:30 a.m. March 17 a march around Honolulu Hale is scheduled to raise awareness of senior hunger in Hawai'i. The march ends at the Mission Memorial Auditorium and marchers will be greeted by the mayor. Entertainment will be provided by seniors in the Happy Strummers and the Stayin' Alive dance troupe. Goodie bags will be distributed to participants by the Hawai'i FoodBank.

• On March 23 a Prime Time Wellness Health Fair is scheduled at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall. Lanakila and Hawai'i Meals on Wheels will have booths set up and distribute information about senior nutrition and hunger.
