Diver Monden wins third state title; Iolani sweeps boys, girls swim crowns

By Kyle Sakamoto
Advertiser Staff Writer

When Aleia Monden started diving at age 5, she practiced with high schoolers.

Now, as a St. Andrew's Priory junior, she is dominating high schoolers.

Monden scored 475.20 points in the 1-meter diving event yesterday to break her own meet record at the Local Motion State Swimming and Diving Championships at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

She also was one of three competitors yesterday to win three consecutive state titles. The others were Kapolei junior Meredith Egloria (50-yard freestyle) and Punahou senior Drew Wallace (1-meter diving).

The Iolani boys won their fourth consecutive state title with 60 points. Interscholastic League of Honolulu rivals Kamehameha (50) and Punahou (44) were second and third, respectively.

The Iolani girls repeated as state champions with 63 points. Punahou finished second with 57 and Kamehameha placed third with 25.

Monden broke her record of 471.65 points set last year. Punahou's Claire Schiff was second yesterday with 397.95 and Kamehameha's Ronnie Oda finished third with 379.50.

"Last year, it was extremely exciting; I broke a 21-year-old record and this time I'm breaking my own and that was my goal today," Monden said.

She added she has practiced with college divers when she was in intermediate and high school.

Monden said practicing with and observing older kids have helped her improve.

"I was diving with high school people when I was 5," Monden said. "There was no one else (my age) diving with me, they were always older than me and it was fun. I've been diving for 11 years and it's exciting for everything to pay off."

Wallace scored 465.90 points to lead a 1-2-3 Punahou finish. Michael Ono was second with 436.55 points and Dylan Jude third with 319.45.

Wallace was trying to break his record of 484.50 set last year, and knew he had to attempt difficult dives to pull it off. He said he attempted a "back 2 1/2 tuck with a 3.0 degree of difficulty" — a dive he's used in only two previous meets.

"I was shooting for 500 points and I made a few mistakes," he said. "I'm still pleased with the end result even though I didn't break the record."

Egloria finished the 50-yard freestyle in 23.74. Iolani's April Woo was second in 24.84 and Punahou's Kelli Moy third in 25.07.

"It feels good, you just go out there and do your best and however it turns out is how it turns out," Egloria said.

Egloria also won the 100 freestyle in 51.96. The only other girl to win multiple individual events was Punahou freshman Michelle Yoshida (1:54.55 in the 200 freestyle and 59.04 in the 100 backstroke).

Senior Dane Wayman won the 100 butterfly in 51.43 for the Iolani boys' only individual title among nine events.

Iolani won the 200 medley relay (1:38.89) and 400 freestyle relay (3:14.41), and finished second in the 200 freestyle relay.

For individual events, teams were awarded 6 points for first, 4 for second, 3 for third, 2 for fourth and 1 for fifth.

In relay events, teams earned points on a 12-8-6-4-2 basis.

"Just to win one state championship is really challenging," Iolani coach Brian Lee said. "It was very close today."

Lee added his boys team won without a super star.

"In past years we've had some real outstanding national level swimmers on the boys side — Hongzhe Sun and Mark Eckert," he said. "This year, not taking anything away from the kids, but we didn't have the outstanding swimmer that could carry us through. So it had to be a team effort and everybody had to make a contribution."

Lee said Daniel Lim, Kyle Ota, Mark Hiramoto and Ike Yato were members of all four state title teams.

Multiple individual event winners on the boys side were turned in by Moanalua's Andrew Lester (200 freestyle in 1:42.51 and 500 freestyle in 4:39.41), King Kekaulike's Hogan Orikasa (200 individual medley in 2:00.32 and 100 backstroke in 53.53) and Kamehameha's Gerald Bolson (50 freestyle in 21.45 and 100 freestyle in 47.10).

The Iolani girls won two individual events: junior Mallorie Lim won the 100 butterfly in 59.76 and freshman Michelle Vawer won the 500 freestyle in 5:12.24. The Raiders also won the 200 medley relay in 1:50.57.

Lee, who also coaches the Iolani girls, said the Raiders won despite being a young team.

"The girls team only graduates one senior," he said. "We didn't have any team captains this year."
