Kahuku sweeps OIA boys, girls wrestling titles

Kahuku's boys, the defending state champions, and its girls, the state runners-up last year, won the O'ahu Interscholastic Association wrestling championships yesterday at Leilehua.

Kahuku's boys were led by defending state 125-pound champion Daniel Morita, who won the 135-pound OIA title.

Kahuku's boys amassed 228.5 points. Pearl City had 191. Kahuku's girls had 134.5 points to edge Pearl City (131).

Two freshmen, Farrington's Tani Ader and Moanalua's Danica Kamakana, won girls titles at 108 and 125 pounds, respectively. In other matches, Pearl City's Nicole Young defeated defending state champion Kristal Kiyuna of 'Aiea, 4-3, in overtime at 140 pounds, and Waipahu's Delilah Joung defeated Moanalua's Alicia Fu, 18-5, at 155 pounds in a rematch of last year's state finals.

The state tournament is Friday and Saturday at Neal Blaisdell Arena.



St. Louis, KS triumph

Defending state champions Brandon Low and Jared Silva helped Saint Louis win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys championship yesterday at Punahou.

Low, state champion at 119 pounds, won the 125 ILH title. Silva, state champ at 171, won at 189.

Saint Louis compiled 162 points. Kamehameha had 153.

In the girls championships, defending 220-pound state champion Randolyn Nohara defeated Iolani's Akemi Holmes, helping Kamehameha edge Iolani.

Kamehameha had 128 points to Iolani's 126.

Iolani was led by defending state champions Carla Watase, who won at 103, and Joleen Oshiro, who took the 108 title. Both won state titles in lower weight classes last year.



COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UH-Hilo beats HPU

Skip Esene scored 20 points as the University of Hawai'i-Hilo men's basketball team completed its regular season with a 71-61 Pacific West Conference victory over Hawai'i Pacific at Mid-Pacific gym last night.

UH-Hilo, ranked No. 13 in the nation and No. 1 in the West Region, is 24-3 overall and 12-3 in the PacWest. HPU is 10-15 and 4-11.

The Vulcans, who clinched the Pacific West title on Tuesday, will be notified March 6 whether they will host an NCAA Regional, which begins on March 12.

HPU finishes its season against Grand Canyon College tomorrow.

Chaminade wins, 78-71

Zach Whiting had 19 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Chaminade to a season-ending 78-71 victory over Grand Canyon University.

Dustin Mittelsteadt added 15 points for Chaminade, which finished 16-11. Grand Canyon (Phoenix, Ariz.) is 11-16.



SWIMMING

Rainbows second

The University of Hawai'i's women's swimming and diving team finished second behind Southern Methodist at the Western Athletic Conference Championships at San Antonio yesterday.

Sophomore Nicole Mackey of the Rainbow Wahine was named Swimmer of the Year by the league's coaches. Mackey won the 200- and 400-yard individual medley events.

Hawai'i sophomore Rui Wang was named Diver of the Year and UH's Melanie Schlanger and SMU's Anja Carman were co-Freshmen of the Year.

Schlanger won the 100 freestyle (49.09) yesterday. UH senior Yan Chen captured the 200 butterfly in 1:59.94.

SMU finished with 860 points, followed by UH (677).

UH men also second

The University of Hawai'i men won three events on the final day of the National Independent Conference Championships at Rochester, Mich.

Southern Methodist finished with 1,005.5 points, followed by UH (740.5).

UH got victories from junior Andrew Affleck in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15 minutes, 19.18 seconds, a provisional NCAA meet qualifying time); Chad Thomsen, who had a provisional qualifying time in the 200 breaststroke (1:59.30), and Mats Wiktorsson in the open platform diving (435.20 points).

UH's Thomas Winkler (200 back) and Graeme Tozer (100 freestyle) also had provisional NCAA qualifying times.



PADDLING

Castle, Anuenue win

Castle won the boys varsity and mixed varsity and Anuenue captured the girls varsity race at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Championships yesterday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.

Anuenue (Kau'i Martinez, Puuwai Crawford-Kapanui, Waianuhea Lyau, Kawailani Soma, Poinaole Perry, Kalau Martinez) won the girls race in 4 minutes, 42.7 seconds. Castle was second in 4:45.

Castle's boys (Kaimi Dudoit, Corey Siquiera, Kevin Snodgrass, Jared Duran, Levi Garcia, Alika Abordo) won in 4:07.3. Leilehua was second in 4:07.9.

In the mixed crew, Castle (Dudoit, Jayna Kapono, Snodgrass, Kapili Kalahiki-Anthony, Kawena Kawainui, Titi Kawainui) won in 4:35.4. Kalaheo was second in 4:35.7.

The junior varsity winners were Pearl City (girls), McKinley (boys) and Castle (mixed).

The state championship is Friday at Ke'ehi Lagoon.



WATER POLO

UH splits matches

The University of Hawai'i matched top-ranked UCLA goal for goal until Bruin Brittany Rowe scored with 1:49 left, lifting UCLA, 6-5, yesterday in the Daktronics Gaucho Invitational at Santa Barbara, Calif.

The match was tied at 2 after the first period, at 3 after the second period and at 5 at the end of the third period.

Iefke Van Belkum, a freshman from Leiden, Netherlands, scored three goals to lead ninth-ranked UH.

The Rainbow Wahine (5-6, 3-1 in the tournament) rebounded in their night match, scoring six goals in the fourth period to beat No. 5 Loyola Marymount, 9-6. Beth Novack led UH with four goals.



BASEBALL

Wichita State sweeps

Wichita State pounded 19 hits in each game en route to a doubleheader sweep — 19-6 and 21-1 — over Hawai'i-Hilo yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.

Wichita State is 10-0, UH-Hilo 1-21.

Tad Reida was 4 for 5 with three RBIs in the first game for Wichita State, which had 19 hits.

The series concludes with a 2 p.m. game today at Wong Stadium in Hilo.



TRACK AND FIELD

UH ninth in WAC

The University of Hawai'i women finished ninth out of 11 teams at the Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships yesterday at Nampa, Idaho.

Louisiana Tech won the meet with 157 points. UH had 34.

UH got third-place finishes from Kelly Young in the 800-meter run (2:09.87) and Novelle Murray in the women's weight throw (56 feet, 1 inch).

UH's Dana Buchanan was fourth in the mile run in 4:53.35.
