Hawai'i day at national cathedral Jan. 9

Advertiser Staff

The blowing of a conch shell and readings of Scriptures in Hawaiian will be part of a special Hawai'i worship service at 11 a.m. Jan. 9 at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D.C.

The service marks Hawai'i State Day at the landmark cathedral, where the nation holds state funerals and services to mark significant events. As part of its national ministry, Washington National Cathedral offers prayers for the people and leaders of each state annually. The cathedral elevates each state in celebration with a major observance once every four years.

"In similar fashion to the special service held in September recognizing the opening of the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington National Cathedral recognizes Hawai'i natives as contributors to the fabric of our nation," said Vanessa Andrews, director of the National Cathedral Association, in a press release.

Those with Hawai'i ties who will play key roles throughout the service include Sen. Dan Inouye and the Rt. Rev. Richard S.O. Chang, Episcopal bishop of Hawai'i, who will preside as celebrant.
